Full Description (Click to Read)

Yabre ā€“ An Ivory Beni Ourain Rug with a Sculptural Brick and Cobblestone Carved Relief

Yabre is one of the most architecturally ambitious pieces in our Beni Ourain rug collection ā€” a 201x314 cm (6'7"x10'3" ft) hand-knotted Moroccan Berber rug in 100% natural wool from the Middle Atlas mountains that takes the carved relief technique to a genuinely unexpected destination. Where most carved relief Beni Ourain rugs work with diamond trellises or concentric geometric forms, the weaver of Yabre has created something far more rare: a full-field pattern of irregular rectangular blocks arranged in horizontal rows, separated by thin sunken lines running both horizontally and vertically across the entire surface. The result reads simultaneously as a bird's-eye view of a stone-paved courtyard, an elevation of a hand-laid brick wall, and a work of abstract textile sculpture ā€” a pattern that has no fixed precedent in the Beni Ourain design vocabulary and instead reflects the individual vision of a single master weaver working at the outer edge of her craft.

Like all carved relief Beni Ourain rugs, Yabre works entirely in tone-on-tone: no dye, no colour contrast, no printed or stamped pattern. The blocks are higher-knotted pile; the separating lines are slightly lower; and the subtle difference in height between these two levels creates a pattern visible only through the interplay of shadow and light across the warm ivory wool surface. In raking light ā€” morning sunlight from a low angle, or the directional glow of a reading lamp ā€” Yabre's cobblestone grid casts micro-shadows that make the blocks appear almost three-dimensional, like a relief sculpture in wool. In diffused light, the pattern softens to a barely perceptible all-over texture. At night, the wool itself glows warmly while the relief quietly holds the pattern beneath the surface.

The Brick and Cobblestone Pattern: Architecture Translated into Wool

The inspiration behind Yabre's pattern ā€” whether conscious or intuitive ā€” belongs to a long tradition in Amazigh weaving of translating the physical environment into textile form. The stone-paved courtyards, terraced fields, and hand-built walls of the Middle Atlas mountains have always provided visual vocabulary for Berber weavers, who observed the geometric order of the built and natural landscape around them and absorbed it into their work. Yabre's brick-and-cobblestone composition belongs to this tradition of tiwiza ā€” collective making and collective seeing ā€” while also being entirely original: no two weavers would ever produce the same arrangement of blocks, sizes, proportions and recessed lines.

The varying widths of the rectangular blocks ā€” some wide and expansive, others narrower and more compressed ā€” prevent the pattern from becoming mechanical or repetitive. Instead, like a real stone pavement or hand-laid brick wall, the composition has an organic irregularity that makes it endlessly readable: no matter how long you look at Yabre, the eye finds new arrangements and rhythms within the overall grid. This quality of sustained visual engagement is one of the hallmarks of the most desirable handmade rugs in the market.

Yabre vs Chaika: Choosing Your Carved Relief Beni Ourain

Both Yabre and our other carved relief Beni Ourain rugs share the same extraordinary natural wool softness and luminous ivory base, but they offer entirely different visual and spatial experiences:

  • Yabre (brick/cobblestone) has a horizontal, earthbound quality ā€” the rows of rectangular blocks suggest ground, pavement, and stone. It works particularly well in spaces with raw materials: concrete, stone, raw wood, brick and linen. The pattern is bold enough to be the dominant visual element in a room.
  • Chaika (diamond trellis) has an upward, expanding quality ā€” the diagonal lattice creates a sense of visual lift and lightness. It works well in more refined, furniture-focused interiors where the rug provides a delicate geometric ground without competing.

Why Choose an Authentic Carved Relief Beni Ourain Rug?

  • A pattern that cannot be faked: The carved relief technique requires hand-knotting individual pile sections to precise heights across the entire rug ā€” a process that is entirely impossible to replicate by machine. Every carved relief Beni Ourain rug is proof of the weaver's mastery.
  • Extraordinary plush softness: Yabre's thick, deeply-knotted pile in 100% natural Atlas mountain wool delivers the most luxurious underfoot experience available in a handwoven rug. The blocks of the cobblestone pattern feel subtly different under bare feet ā€” a tactile experience as well as a visual one.
  • Tone-on-tone sophistication: The ivory-on-ivory carved relief means Yabre adds visual complexity without adding colour. It works in spaces where any coloured rug would compete ā€” in particular, rooms with strong wall colours, art, or furniture.
  • Genuinely rare composition: The brick/cobblestone motif is not a standard Beni Ourain template. Finding a hand-knotted Beni Ourain rug with this specific pattern vocabulary is genuinely uncommon, making Yabre a collector-level piece for anyone who values rarity in their interior objects.
  • Natural durability: High lanolin content in the Atlas mountain wool provides natural water and dirt resistance, protecting the rug's beauty over years of daily use in even high-traffic areas.

Where Yabre Works Best

  • Raw material interiors: Concrete floors, exposed brick walls, raw plaster, stone and heavy natural wood are the natural habitat for Yabre. The cobblestone pattern resonates with these materials at a visual and textural level.
  • Living room in a loft or industrial space: Yabre's architectural boldness is perfectly matched to the scale and material vocabulary of loft or converted industrial interiors.
  • Minimalist or Japandi bedroom: Under a low-profile bed in a space built on natural materials and neutral tones, Yabre's carved brick relief reads as pure abstract texture ā€” no colour, maximum visual interest.
  • Dining room: The horizontal rows of the brick pattern work naturally under a rectangular dining table ā€” the grid of the rug and the grid of the table legs create a satisfying structural conversation.
  • Design-led studio or workspace: In a creative workspace where the environment itself is part of the statement, Yabre functions as a grounding, architectural element ā€” a soft counterpoint to hard surfaces.

Caring for Your Beni Ourain Rug

  • Vacuum regularly using suction only ā€” avoid a rotating beater bar on the natural wool pile, which could disturb the carved relief height variation.
  • Rotate periodically in high-traffic areas for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately with cold water and a clean cloth ā€” never rub the ivory pile.
  • Professional hand-washing is strongly recommended over machine cleaning for deep cleans.
  • Air occasionally outdoors in shaded, dry conditions to keep the natural wool fresh.

About OunizZ

OunizZ | Brand Story
Although OunizZ was launched in Marrakech at the end of 2019, our story goes back millennia to when the first Berber rugs were created in the 7th century. Drawing on the romance of history, traditional craftsmanship, and a commitment to creating an equitable future for the women who weave Moroccan rugs, OunizZ was created to share the story of Morocco with the world.
With a focus on empowerment, sustainability, and heritage, weā€™re committed to stocking ethically-made fair trade rugs woven from cruelty-free sheepā€™s wool. In addition, our highly-skilled weavers have over four decades of experience in handwoven textiles, representing ancient wisdom passed down by generations of powerful women.
OunizZ is a story of loveā€”for Morocco, her traditions, and her peopleā€”written by our founders for the country they hold dear. Each of our rugs is custom-created to tell a unique story about our history, heritage, and land. This is ours.
Ā
Celebrate Morroccoā€™s Rich History
OunizZ founders, Sonia and Oussama, share a deep love for beauty and nature, both of which are abundant in Morocco. From snow-capped mountains and untouched deserts, to pristine beaches and ephemeral wetlands, OunizZ is on a mission to share the countryā€™s hidden gems through exceptionally crafted Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs.
Sonia was working in the hospitality industry when the pandemic swept the world. The thousands of travelers who journeyed to Morocco each year were unable to buy the one-of-a-kind handmade items that enriched the local economy, while weavers (some of them Soniaā€™s family members) were unable to sell their textiles and put food on their tables.
When Sonia lost her hospitality job, she realized she could uplift hundreds of women, returning their financial independence and ability to practice the craft they had honed over decades. She and her husband Oussama founded OunizZ with the vision of transforming the industry and exporting Moroccan rugs to the world and, within a year, the company grew into the largest exporter of rugs in the country.
Ā
Bringing Transparency to the Moroccan Textile Industry
While Moroccan rugs have grown in demand over the past few decades, the art form has been under threat. This is because the overwhelming majority of companies selling Moroccan rugs online are not the makersā€”instead, they are intermediaries who buy rugs at low prices.
Moroccan rugs are traditionally made in rural areas with little access to education and employment. Many of these weavers do not know the market value of the rugs they create. As a result, the women who create Moroccan rugs become invisible in the industry, seldom benefitting from their sales and rarely making enough to sustain their families.
At OunizZ, we donā€™tā€”and never willā€”source rugs through intermediaries. Instead, we work directly with weavers to ensure they are paid fairly. Our Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs are custom-made for OunizZ, and crafted in our weavers' own homes, where they work with their mothers, sisters, and daughters. This empowers them to pass on generational wisdom while working at their own rhythm and caring for their families and communities.
Ā
Welcome the Spirit of Morocco to Your Home
Beyond our commitment to creating an equitable industry that champions economic security and uplifts the custodians of the tradition, we believe that Moroccan rugs are an ode to the countryā€™s rich history. We see it as our duty to protect and share it with the world.
Our Moroccan rugs are available in countless sizes, colors, and patterns, each informed by the areas in which they are woven. From the thick shag rugs created in colder regions to the flatweave rugs originally crafted by nomadic tribes, each Moroccan rug tells a unique story about geography, heritage, and the weaversā€™ artistic expression.
Whether you want to make a bold statement with a bright Moroccan rug or complement your space with a handwoven neutral rug, shop the OunizZ range of ethically-made fair trade Boujaad rugs, Beni Mrirt rugs, Beni Ouarian rugs, Azilal rugs, and vintage rugs for long-lasting works of art that elevate any space.

Customer photo review of Lamaa - Red Berber Moroccan Rug 6x10 | Authentic Boujad handmade Moroccan Carpet | 6'17x10'10 Ft | 188x308 cm

I absolutely love my Moroccan handmade Carpet which arrived a few days ago. The whole process of purchasing this Carpet was very smooth from start to finish. After placing my order, I received a WhatsApp message from Sonia to check on some details to ensure delivery. Being able to communicate this way, resulted in my also receiving a complementary doormat to compensate for my not receiving a 10% discount as I was a first time Customer. I absolutely love this Carpet from the vibrant colours to how soft it is and I also like knowing that it was ethically made. Recommend 100%

Easy and efficient purchasing. Questions answered quickly. Carpets are clean, plush, beautifully handmade and well-priced. I was challenged with trying to make a tiny NYC apartment feel stylish and cozy and they're the perfect antidote to all the factory made copies. The look is luxxe, soulful and enduring. I bought 4 at incredible prices and they were perfect.

We went to Morocco last year and fell absolutely in love with your country and its people. We bought several rugs at a fair-trade shop in Fez, and upon our return, I kept researching Moroccan rugs. Thatā€™s when I read your story. I feel so strongly that your business should be supported. Thank you for helping preserve these vital traditions which I consider a treasure for all of humanity, and thank you for giving these beautiful women artisans a chance at having a better life.
