The classic Beni Ourain, the best rug for all interiors and all designs. Ait Ouaraïn is small but famous tribe in the east of Taza city in the Middle atlas, they only use soft and thick natural wool to make the best handmade spark for your space. The colors and styles are inspired from the snowy and Rocky Mountains of the middle atlas.
It is now very popular for the clean and minimalist style it offers and for its aesthetics and comfort.
The region of Beni Ouarain has very little contact with the outside world. Through a lifestyle almost autarky, these people have a very strong relationship with their traditions and their ancestral culture. Nestled in a mountainous region, the environment of Beni Ourain has a cold climate the most part of the year. As a result, these tribes have always made giant-sized rugs that serve as floor coverings in their homes and large tents. Today, the weavers of these Berber Beni Ourain rugs have adapted their products to smaller rugs to fit all interiors. In this region, the weaver occupies a central place in the tribal life, for the most of them it is the only source of income, Nowadays the rugs weaving gives women pride and dignity in a patriarchal society.

De reis van 10 weken om deze schoonheid te maken

Stap 1: De wol voorbereiden - van ruw vlies tot fijn garen

De wol wordt zorgvuldig gekamd om vuil te verwijderen en de vezels uit te lijnen. Dit is een delicaat proces dat geduld en aandacht voor detail vereist, zodat alleen de fijnste, schoonste vezels worden gebruikt. Vervolgens wordt de wol gekaard, een techniek die de vezels verder uitlijnt en scheidt, waardoor een zacht, luchtig materiaal ontstaat dat klaar is om te spinnen.

Stap 2: De wol verven - De kleuren van de natuur inbrengen

De volgende stap in onze reis is het verven van de wol. Dit proces omvat het dopen van de wol in onze handgemaakte natuurlijke kleurstoffen, die worden verhit boven een open vuur. Zoals u zult zien in de bijbehorende GIF, wordt de wol zorgvuldig geroerd om een gelijkmatige kleuring te garanderen. Deze stap is cruciaal om de diepe, rijke kleuren te bereiken die onze Beni Ourain-tapijten laten opvallen. We doen er alles aan om chemicaliën te vermijden en ervoor te zorgen dat elk tapijt zo natuurlijk en veilig mogelijk is, van de vezels tot het eindproduct.

Stap 3: Het tapijt weven - Knoop voor knoop schoonheid maken

Het weven van een Beni Ourain-kleed is een ingewikkeld en arbeidsintensief proces dat vaardigheid, geduld en precisie vereist. Elk kleed wordt knoop voor knoop vervaardigd, een techniek die al generaties lang wordt doorgegeven. Het maken van een kleed van 6x9 ft kan 4 tot 6 weken duren, afhankelijk van de complexiteit van het ontwerp. Onze getalenteerde wevers behoren tot de weinigen op de markt die een ontwerp van een foto met een nauwkeurigheid van 95% kunnen reproduceren, een prestatie die elders bijna onmogelijk is. Deze toewijding aan vakmanschap zorgt ervoor dat elk kleed dat we produceren van de hoogste kwaliteit is, echt een kunstwerk.

Stap 4: Het vloerkleed trimmen - De pool perfectioneren

Voordat het kleed wordt gewassen, trimmen we de polen nauwkeurig met een grote handschaar om ervoor te zorgen dat ze gelijk zijn. Deze stap vereist grote vaardigheid en precisie, aangezien de wever elk deel zorgvuldig trimt om de gewenste textuur en gladheid te bereiken. Door de pool gelijk te maken, verbeteren we de zachtheid en uniformiteit van het kleed, waardoor het er niet alleen perfect uitziet, maar ook luxueus aanvoelt onder de voeten. Stap 5: Het tapijt wassen - Zorg voor zuiverheid en veiligheid

Het wassen van het tapijt is een van de belangrijkste stappen in ons proces. Helaas worden 80% van de tapijten op de markt nooit gewassen , en van de 19% die dat wel zijn, worden velen behandeld met schadelijke chemicaliën om hun uiterlijk te verbeteren. In onze werkplaats wassen we elk tapijt 4 tot 5 keer met alleen water en natuurlijke zeep. Deze grondige wasbeurt reinigt het tapijt niet alleen, maar zorgt er ook voor dat het veilig is voor uw huis. We willen dat u er gerust op kunt zijn dat uw tapijt vrij is van schadelijke chemicaliën en echt schoon is.

Stap 6: Het vloerkleed drogen – de warmte van de zon omarmen

Na het wassen worden onze tapijten voorzichtig onder de Marokkaanse zon gehangen om te drogen. Dit natuurlijke droogproces duurt 2 tot 4 dagen, afhankelijk van het weer. We laten de zon langzaam en voorzichtig zijn werk doen, zodat elk tapijt gelijkmatig en grondig wordt gedroogd. Als het regent, wachten we gewoon, want er is geen haast bij een proces dat al eeuwenlang is geperfectioneerd. Deze stap zorgt ervoor dat uw tapijt zo natuurlijk en fris mogelijk is, waarbij de essentie van het Marokkaanse landschap wordt vastgelegd.

Stap 7: Laatste inspectie - Voorbereiding op zijn nieuwe huis

Voordat een tapijt onze werkplaats verlaat, ondergaat het een strenge inspectie om te garanderen dat het voldoet aan onze hoge normen. Een goed gemaakt Marokkaans tapijt is bedoeld om tientallen jaren mee te gaan, en wij nemen deze verantwoordelijkheid serieus. Wij controleren elk detail om er zeker van te zijn dat het geschikt is om een authentiek Beni Ourain-tapijt te worden genoemd. Pas na deze grondige inspectie bereiden we het voor op verzending, in de overtuiging dat het de komende jaren warmte, schoonheid en comfort zal brengen in zijn nieuwe thuis.

OunizZ founders, Sonia and Oussama, share a deep love for beauty and nature, both of which are abundant in Morocco. From snow-capped mountains and untouched deserts, to pristine beaches and ephemeral wetlands, OunizZ is on a mission to share the country’s hidden gems through exceptionally crafted Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs.

Sonia was working in the hospitality industry when the pandemic swept the world. The thousands of travelers who journeyed to Morocco each year were unable to buy the one-of-a-kind handmade items that enriched the local economy, while weavers (some of them Sonia’s family members) were unable to sell their textiles and put food on their tables.

When Sonia lost her hospitality job, she realized she could uplift hundreds of women, returning their financial independence and ability to practice the craft they had honed over decades. She and her husband Oussama founded OunizZ with the vision of transforming the industry and exporting Moroccan rugs to the world and, within a year, the company grew into the largest exporter of rugs in the country.

Bringing Transparency to the Moroccan Textile Industry

While Moroccan rugs have grown in demand over the past few decades, the art form has been under threat. This is because the overwhelming majority of companies selling Moroccan rugs online are not the makers—instead, they are intermediaries who buy rugs at low prices.

Moroccan rugs are traditionally made in rural areas with little access to education and employment. Many of these weavers do not know the market value of the rugs they create. As a result, the women who create Moroccan rugs become invisible in the industry, seldom benefitting from their sales and rarely making enough to sustain their families.

At OunizZ, we don’t—and never will—source rugs through intermediaries. Instead, we work directly with weavers to ensure they are paid fairly. Our Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs are custom-made for OunizZ, and crafted in our weavers' own homes, where they work with their mothers, sisters, and daughters. This empowers them to pass on generational wisdom while working at their own rhythm and caring for their families and communities.
