Kwata – An Olive Green Beni Ourain Rug with an Abstract Organic Branching Line Composition

Kwata is among the most visually compelling pieces in our Beni Ourain rug collection, and certainly the most botanically alive. This exceptional 153x242 cm (5'x7'11" ft) hand-knotted Moroccan Berber rug is made in 100% natural wool from the Middle Atlas mountains, in a rich, warm olive and moss green that sits at the exact meeting point of forest green, ochre and khaki — an earthy, sophisticated colour that shifts in character depending on the light around it. Against this deep green ground, a composition of fluid ivory lines branches and sweeps across the field: a central stem-like line rises and divides into sweeping diagonal curves that travel left and right across the rug, suggesting at different moments a tree, a river delta branching into a valley, lightning splitting across a sky, or topographic contour lines on a map. A rectangular outline accent sits quietly in the lower right corner, providing a geometric counterpoint to the organic movement of the branching lines above.

The result is a Beni Ourain rug that brings something genuinely rare into interior design: organic, naturalistic energy in a handwoven wool textile. Most Beni Ourain rugs — and most handmade rugs generally — work with geometric or symbolic motifs. Kwata's abstract branching composition belongs to a different tradition within Amazigh weaving: the translation of natural forms into textile, in which the weaver works from direct observation of the landscape around her — the branching of a cedar tree, the forking of a mountain stream, the spreading of roots through stone — and absorbs those forms into the rhythm of the loom.

The Olive Green Palette: An Exceptional Colour in Beni Ourain Tradition

The colour of Kwata deserves particular attention. While the classic Beni Ourain rug is defined by its undyed ivory white wool, a smaller number of Beni Ourain pieces use overdyed colour — wool that has been dyed after weaving or knotting — to produce rugs that retain the extraordinary softness and pile quality of the Beni Ourain tradition while adding a colour dimension that opens them up to a much wider range of interior applications.

Kwata's olive green is not a simple or saturated colour. It is a complex, warm tone that reads differently in different lights: in strong natural light, it leans towards a golden, almost ochre-green; in shade or artificial light, it deepens into a mossy forest green; in evening lamplight, it takes on warmth and richness that makes the ivory branching lines glow. This tonal complexity — a quality that comes from the natural wool fibre and the way it absorbs and reflects light — is part of what makes Kwata such an extraordinarily liveable rug. It will look different at 9am, at midday, and at 9pm, and never exactly the same twice.

The Abstract Organic Pattern: Nature as Design Vocabulary

The branching line composition in Kwata is one of the most unusual motifs in our collection. It belongs to a tradition of naturalistic abstraction that predates the more geometrically rigid Beni Ourain vocabulary most people are familiar with — a tradition in which the weaver's eye moves between the landscape and the loom, finding the formal language of nature and translating it into wool.

The composition can be read in multiple ways simultaneously, which is part of its power:

  • As a tree: The central vertical rises and branches left and right, as an Atlas cedar or mountain oak would spread its arms against a hillside.
  • As a river: The lines flow and divide like a delta seen from above, channels splitting and rejoining across a flat plain.
  • As lightning: The branching diagonals have the electric, instantaneous quality of a lightning fork captured at the moment of impact.
  • As a topographic map: The sweeping curves suggest elevation contours, the way a cartographer traces the shape of a mountain.

None of these readings is definitive, and all of them coexist. This ambiguity — the quality of a form that cannot be finally fixed — is what makes the composition feel alive rather than decorative.

Why Choose an Olive Green Beni Ourain Rug?

  • A colour that works with everything warm: Olive and moss green sits harmoniously alongside terracotta, ochre, natural wood, sand, cream, rust, copper and warm grey. It is one of the most interior-versatile green tones available — never too cool, never too saturated, always anchoring.
  • Extraordinary softness in a coloured rug: Many coloured Moroccan rugs sacrifice pile quality for colour. Kwata retains the deep, plush Beni Ourain wool quality — the colour is in the wool, not on it.
  • Unique organic composition: The abstract branching line pattern is not found on any other rug in our collection, and its naturalistic quality gives it a freshness and energy that geometric patterns cannot replicate.
  • A conversation starter: Kwata is the kind of rug that guests notice and ask about. The olive green colour and abstract organic pattern are visually distinctive enough to become the subject of genuine curiosity.
  • Natural durability: High lanolin content in Atlas mountain wool provides natural water and dirt resistance.

Where Kwata Works Best

  • Warm earthy interior: Terracotta walls, warm plaster, natural wood floors, rattan and linen furniture — Kwata's olive green anchors this palette with depth and botanical energy.
  • Biophilic design space: In a room that references nature through plant life, natural materials and organic forms, Kwata's branching composition extends that language to the floor in a way no geometric rug can.
  • Living room with neutral furniture: A cream or linen sofa, natural wood coffee table, warm-toned walls — Kwata provides the room's colour story entirely on its own, with the abstract organic pattern ensuring visual interest without visual noise.
  • Bedroom in warm neutral palette: The rich olive green creates a grounded, restful bedroom feel — deep enough to anchor the space, warm enough to feel inviting rather than cool.
  • Eclectic or collected interior: Kwata works beautifully in a space that mixes periods, origins and styles, where it reads as a found object of genuine character rather than a coordinated design choice.

About OunizZ

OunizZ | Brand Story
Although OunizZ was launched in Marrakech at the end of 2019, our story goes back millennia to when the first Berber rugs were created in the 7th century. Drawing on the romance of history, traditional craftsmanship, and a commitment to creating an equitable future for the women who weave Moroccan rugs, OunizZ was created to share the story of Morocco with the world.
With a focus on empowerment, sustainability, and heritage, we’re committed to stocking ethically-made fair trade rugs woven from cruelty-free sheep’s wool. In addition, our highly-skilled weavers have over four decades of experience in handwoven textiles, representing ancient wisdom passed down by generations of powerful women.
OunizZ is a story of love—for Morocco, her traditions, and her people—written by our founders for the country they hold dear. Each of our rugs is custom-created to tell a unique story about our history, heritage, and land. This is ours.

Celebrate Morrocco’s Rich History
OunizZ founders, Sonia and Oussama, share a deep love for beauty and nature, both of which are abundant in Morocco. From snow-capped mountains and untouched deserts, to pristine beaches and ephemeral wetlands, OunizZ is on a mission to share the country’s hidden gems through exceptionally crafted Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs.
Sonia was working in the hospitality industry when the pandemic swept the world. The thousands of travelers who journeyed to Morocco each year were unable to buy the one-of-a-kind handmade items that enriched the local economy, while weavers (some of them Sonia’s family members) were unable to sell their textiles and put food on their tables.
When Sonia lost her hospitality job, she realized she could uplift hundreds of women, returning their financial independence and ability to practice the craft they had honed over decades. She and her husband Oussama founded OunizZ with the vision of transforming the industry and exporting Moroccan rugs to the world and, within a year, the company grew into the largest exporter of rugs in the country.

Bringing Transparency to the Moroccan Textile Industry
While Moroccan rugs have grown in demand over the past few decades, the art form has been under threat. This is because the overwhelming majority of companies selling Moroccan rugs online are not the makers—instead, they are intermediaries who buy rugs at low prices.
Moroccan rugs are traditionally made in rural areas with little access to education and employment. Many of these weavers do not know the market value of the rugs they create. As a result, the women who create Moroccan rugs become invisible in the industry, seldom benefitting from their sales and rarely making enough to sustain their families.
At OunizZ, we don’t—and never will—source rugs through intermediaries. Instead, we work directly with weavers to ensure they are paid fairly. Our Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs are custom-made for OunizZ, and crafted in our weavers' own homes, where they work with their mothers, sisters, and daughters. This empowers them to pass on generational wisdom while working at their own rhythm and caring for their families and communities.

Welcome the Spirit of Morocco to Your Home
Beyond our commitment to creating an equitable industry that champions economic security and uplifts the custodians of the tradition, we believe that Moroccan rugs are an ode to the country’s rich history. We see it as our duty to protect and share it with the world.
Our Moroccan rugs are available in countless sizes, colors, and patterns, each informed by the areas in which they are woven. From the thick shag rugs created in colder regions to the flatweave rugs originally crafted by nomadic tribes, each Moroccan rug tells a unique story about geography, heritage, and the weavers’ artistic expression.
Whether you want to make a bold statement with a bright Moroccan rug or complement your space with a handwoven neutral rug, shop the OunizZ range of ethically-made fair trade Boujaad rugs, Beni Mrirt rugs, Beni Ouarian rugs, Azilal rugs, and vintage rugs for long-lasting works of art that elevate any space.
