The Story Behind Our Beni Ourain Rugs

The classic Beni Ourain, the best rug for all interiors and all designs. Ait Ouaraïn is small but famous tribe in the east of Taza city in the Middle atlas, they only use soft and thick natural wool to make the best handmade spark for your space. The colors and styles are inspired from the snowy and Rocky Mountains of the middle atlas.
It is now very popular for the clean and minimalist style it offers and for its aesthetics and comfort.
The region of Beni Ouarain has very little contact with the outside world. Through a lifestyle almost autarky, these people have a very strong relationship with their traditions and their ancestral culture. Nestled in a mountainous region, the environment of Beni Ourain has a cold climate the most part of the year. As a result, these tribes have always made giant-sized rugs that serve as floor coverings in their homes and large tents. Today, the weavers of these Berber Beni Ourain rugs have adapted their products to smaller rugs to fit all interiors. In this region, the weaver occupies a central place in the tribal life, for the most of them it is the only source of income, Nowadays the rugs weaving gives women pride and dignity in a patriarchal society.

Resan på 10 veckor – så tillverkar vi våra mattor

Steg 1: Förberedelse av ullen – Från råull till fint garn

Ullen kamas noggrant för att ta bort föroreningar och rikta upp fibrerna. Detta är en känslig process som kräver tålamod och uppmärksamhet för att säkerställa att endast de finaste, renaste fibrerna används. Därefter kardas ullen — en teknik som ytterligare riktar upp och separerar fibrerna och skapar ett mjukt, luftigt material som är redo att spinnas.

Steg 2: Färgning av ullen – Naturens färger

Nästa steg är färgning av ullen. Processen innebär att ullen doppas i våra hantverksmässigt tillverkade naturliga färgämnen, som värms upp över öppen eld. Ullen rörs noggrant om för att säkerställa jämn färgning. Detta steg är avgörande för att uppnå de djupa, rika färgerna som utmärker våra Beni Ourain mattor. Vi undviker noga alla kemikalier för att säkerställa att varje matta är så naturlig och säker som möjligt.

Steg 3: Vävning av mattan – Skönhet knut för knut

Att väva en Beni Ourain – Beni Mrirt matta är en invecklad och arbetsintensiv process som kräver skicklighet, tålamod och precision. Varje matta tillverkas knut för knut, en teknik som förts vidare från generation till generation. Att skapa en matta på 200x300 cm kan ta allt från 4 till 6 veckor, beroende på designens komplexitet. Våra begåvade vävare tillhör de få på marknaden som kan återskapa ett design från en bild med upp till 95% noggrannhet.

Steg 4: Klippning av mattan – Att perfektionera pälsen

Innan mattan tvättas trimmar vi noggrant pälsen med stora handsaxar för att säkerställa att de är jämna. Det här steget kräver stor skicklighet och precision när vävaren trimmar varje avsnitt noggrant för att uppnå önskad textur och jämnhet. Genom att jämna ut pälsen förbättrar vi mattans mjukhet och enhetlighet.

Steg 5: Tvättning av mattan – Renhet och säkerhet

Tvättning av mattan är ett av de mest kritiska stegen i vår process. Tyvärr tvättas 80% av mattorna på marknaden aldrig, och av de 19% som tvättas behandlas många med skadliga kemikalier. I vår verkstad tvättar vi varje matta 4 till 5 gånger med enbart vatten och naturlig tvål. Denna grundliga tvättning renar inte bara mattan utan säkerställer även att den är säker för ditt hem.

Steg 6: Torkning av mattan – Under den Marockanska solen

Efter tvättning hängs våra mattor noggrant upp under den Marockanska solen för att torka. Denna naturliga torkningsprocess tar 2 till 4 dagar beroende på vädret. Vi låter solen göra sitt arbete, långsamt och försiktigt, och säkerställer att varje matta torkas jämnt och noggrant. Om det regnar väntar vi helt enkelt, för denna process som perfektionerats under århundraden kan inte forceras.

Steg 7: Slutinspektion – Redo för sitt nya hem

Innan en matta lämnar vår verkstad genomgår den en noggrann inspektion för att säkerställa att den uppfyller våra höga standarder. En välgjord Marockansk matta är avsedd att hålla i decennier, och vi tar detta ansvar på allvar. Vi kontrollerar varje detalj för att säkerställa att den förtjänar att kallas en äkta Beni Ourain matta.

Celebrate Morrocco’s Rich History

OunizZ founders, Sonia and Oussama, share a deep love for beauty and nature, both of which are abundant in Morocco. From snow-capped mountains and untouched deserts, to pristine beaches and ephemeral wetlands, OunizZ is on a mission to share the country’s hidden gems through exceptionally crafted Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs.

Sonia was working in the hospitality industry when the pandemic swept the world. The thousands of travelers who journeyed to Morocco each year were unable to buy the one-of-a-kind handmade items that enriched the local economy, while weavers (some of them Sonia’s family members) were unable to sell their textiles and put food on their tables.

When Sonia lost her hospitality job, she realized she could uplift hundreds of women, returning their financial independence and ability to practice the craft they had honed over decades. She and her husband Oussama founded OunizZ with the vision of transforming the industry and exporting Moroccan rugs to the world and, within a year, the company grew into the largest exporter of rugs in the country.

Bringing Transparency to the Moroccan Textile Industry

While Moroccan rugs have grown in demand over the past few decades, the art form has been under threat. This is because the overwhelming majority of companies selling Moroccan rugs online are not the makers—instead, they are intermediaries who buy rugs at low prices.

Moroccan rugs are traditionally made in rural areas with little access to education and employment. Many of these weavers do not know the market value of the rugs they create. As a result, the women who create Moroccan rugs become invisible in the industry, seldom benefitting from their sales and rarely making enough to sustain their families.

At OunizZ, we don’t—and never will—source rugs through intermediaries. Instead, we work directly with weavers to ensure they are paid fairly. Our Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs are custom-made for OunizZ, and crafted in our weavers' own homes, where they work with their mothers, sisters, and daughters. This empowers them to pass on generational wisdom while working at their own rhythm and caring for their families and communities.
