What’s a Beni Mrirt Rug?

A Beni Mrirt rug is a premium Moroccan wool rug originating from the Beni Mrirt tribe in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Renowned for their dense, double-knotted weave and superior wool quality, these berber rug pieces are celebrated as noble rugs with exceptionally long, soft piles. Handwoven by Berber women using traditional techniques, Mrirt rugs are prized for their luxury shag carpet feel and intricate designs, making them a favorite among high quality wool rugs enthusiasts.

What’s the Difference Between Beni Ourain and Beni Mrirt?

While both are Moroccan shag rug styles, Beni Ourain rugs typically feature undyed or naturally dyed wool in neutral tones with minimalist patterns, whereas Beni Mrirt rugs are known for their vibrant colors, including dusty rose, and denser, thicker piles, reflecting a more luxurious craftsmanship. This dusty rose Moroccan rug exemplifies the Beni Mrirt tradition, offering a luxury thick carpet experience distinct from the simpler Beni Ourain rug. Learn care tips at How to Clean Moroccan Rugs.

Craftsmanship and Cultural Significance

Each Morocco rug is a labor of love, crafted with a tied, buckled, twisted weave technique that ensures its high end rugs status. The plush rugs for bedroom texture results from Berber women packing wool with a metal comb, followed by meticulous cleaning by their husbands, a process that can take weeks. This large luxury rug supports tribal traditions while elevating your modern rug setup as a luxury area rugs for living room centerpiece.

The journey of 10 weeks making our Rugs

Step 1: Preparing the Wool - From Raw Fleece to Fine Yarn

The wool is carefully combed to remove any debris and to align the fibers. This is a delicate process that requires patience and attention to detail, ensuring that only the finest, cleanest fibers are used. Next, the wool is carded—a technique that further aligns and separates the fibers, creating a soft, airy material that’s ready for spinning.

Step 2: Dyeing the Wool - Infusing Nature’s Colors

The next step in our journey is dyeing the wool. This process involves dipping the wool into our handcrafted natural dyes, which are heated over an open fire. As you’ll see in the accompanying GIF, the wool is carefully stirred to ensure even coloration. This step is crucial for achieving the deep, rich colors that make our Beni Ourain rugs stand out. We take great care to avoid any chemicals, ensuring that each rug is as natural and safe as possible, from the fibers to the final product.

Step 3: Weaving the Rug - Crafting Beauty Knot by Knot

Weaving a Beni Ourain rug is an intricate and labor-intensive process that demands skill, patience, and precision. Each rug is crafted knot by knot, a technique that has been passed down through generations. Creating a 6x9 ft rug can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design. Our talented weavers are among the few in the market who can replicate a design from a picture with up to 95% accuracy, a feat that’s nearly impossible to achieve elsewhere. This dedication to craftsmanship ensures that every rug we produce is of the highest quality, truly a work of art.

Step 4: Trimming the Rug - Perfecting the Pile

Before the rug is washed, we meticulously trim the piles using large hand scissors to ensure they are even. This step requires great skill and precision, as the weaver trims each section carefully to achieve the desired texture and smoothness. By evening out the pile, we enhance the softness and uniformity of the rug, ensuring it not only looks perfect but feels luxurious underfoot. This final touch adds to the rug's beauty and durability, making it truly one-of-a-kind before moving on to the washing process.

Step 5: Washing the Rug - Ensuring Purity and Safety

Washing the rug is one of the most critical steps in our process. Sadly, 80% of rugs on the market are never washed, and of the 19% that are, many are treated with harmful chemicals to enhance their appearance. At our workshop, we wash each rug 4 to 5 times using only water and natural soap. This thorough washing not only purifies the rug but also ensures that it is safe for your home. We want you to have peace of mind knowing that your rug is free from harmful chemicals and truly clean.

Step 6: Drying the Rug - Embracing the Sun’s Warmth

After washing, our rugs are carefully hung under the Moroccan sun to dry. This natural drying process takes 2 to 4 days, depending on the weather. We let the sun do its work, slowly and gently, ensuring that each rug is dried evenly and thoroughly. If it rains, we simply wait, because there is no rushing a process that’s been perfected over centuries. This step ensures that your rug is as natural and fresh as possible, capturing the essence of the Moroccan landscape.

Step 7: Final Inspection - Preparing for Its New Home

Before a rug leaves our workshop, it undergoes a rigorous inspection to ensure it meets our high standards. A well-made Moroccan rug is meant to last for decades, and we take this responsibility seriously. We check every detail to make sure it is fit to be called an authentic Beni Ourain rug. Only after this thorough inspection do we prepare it for shipping, confident that it will bring warmth, beauty, and comfort to its new home for years to come.

Each step in this 10-week journey is a labor of love, a testament to our commitment to quality and sustainability. By the time your Beni Ourain rug arrives at your doorstep, it has already been through a process steeped in tradition and care, making it more than just a rug—it’s a piece of art with a story to tell.

About OunizZ

OunizZ | Brand Story
Although OunizZ was launched in Marrakech at the end of 2019, our story goes back millennia to when the first Berber rugs were created in the 7th century. Drawing on the romance of history, traditional craftsmanship, and a commitment to creating an equitable future for the women who weave Moroccan rugs, OunizZ was created to share the story of Morocco with the world.
With a focus on empowerment, sustainability, and heritage, we’re committed to stocking ethically-made fair trade rugs woven from cruelty-free sheep’s wool. In addition, our highly-skilled weavers have over four decades of experience in handwoven textiles, representing ancient wisdom passed down by generations of powerful women.
OunizZ is a story of love—for Morocco, her traditions, and her people—written by our founders for the country they hold dear. Each of our rugs is custom-created to tell a unique story about our history, heritage, and land. This is ours.

Celebrate Morrocco’s Rich History
OunizZ founders, Sonia and Oussama, share a deep love for beauty and nature, both of which are abundant in Morocco. From snow-capped mountains and untouched deserts, to pristine beaches and ephemeral wetlands, OunizZ is on a mission to share the country’s hidden gems through exceptionally crafted Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs.
Sonia was working in the hospitality industry when the pandemic swept the world. The thousands of travelers who journeyed to Morocco each year were unable to buy the one-of-a-kind handmade items that enriched the local economy, while weavers (some of them Sonia’s family members) were unable to sell their textiles and put food on their tables.
When Sonia lost her hospitality job, she realized she could uplift hundreds of women, returning their financial independence and ability to practice the craft they had honed over decades. She and her husband Oussama founded OunizZ with the vision of transforming the industry and exporting Moroccan rugs to the world and, within a year, the company grew into the largest exporter of rugs in the country.

Bringing Transparency to the Moroccan Textile Industry
While Moroccan rugs have grown in demand over the past few decades, the art form has been under threat. This is because the overwhelming majority of companies selling Moroccan rugs online are not the makers—instead, they are intermediaries who buy rugs at low prices.
Moroccan rugs are traditionally made in rural areas with little access to education and employment. Many of these weavers do not know the market value of the rugs they create. As a result, the women who create Moroccan rugs become invisible in the industry, seldom benefitting from their sales and rarely making enough to sustain their families.
At OunizZ, we don’t—and never will—source rugs through intermediaries. Instead, we work directly with weavers to ensure they are paid fairly. Our Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs are custom-made for OunizZ, and crafted in our weavers' own homes, where they work with their mothers, sisters, and daughters. This empowers them to pass on generational wisdom while working at their own rhythm and caring for their families and communities.

Welcome the Spirit of Morocco to Your Home
Beyond our commitment to creating an equitable industry that champions economic security and uplifts the custodians of the tradition, we believe that Moroccan rugs are an ode to the country’s rich history. We see it as our duty to protect and share it with the world.
Our Moroccan rugs are available in countless sizes, colors, and patterns, each informed by the areas in which they are woven. From the thick shag rugs created in colder regions to the flatweave rugs originally crafted by nomadic tribes, each Moroccan rug tells a unique story about geography, heritage, and the weavers’ artistic expression.
Whether you want to make a bold statement with a bright Moroccan rug or complement your space with a handwoven neutral rug, shop the OunizZ range of ethically-made fair trade Boujaad rugs, Beni Mrirt rugs, Beni Ouarian rugs, Azilal rugs, and vintage rugs for long-lasting works of art that elevate any space.
