De reis van 10 weken – zo maken wij onze vloerkleden

Stap 1: Voorbereiding van de wol – Van ruwe vlies tot fijn garen

De wol wordt zorgvuldig gekamd om onzuiverheden te verwijderen en de vezels uit te lijnen. Dit is een delicaat proces dat geduld en aandacht voor detail vereist, zodat alleen de fijnste, schoonste vezels worden gebruikt. Vervolgens wordt de wol gecard — een techniek die de vezels verder uitlijnt en scheidt, waardoor een zacht, luchtig materiaal ontstaat dat klaar is om te spinnen.

Stap 2: Verven van de wol – De kleuren van de natuur

De volgende stap is het verven van de wol. Dit proces omvat het onderdompelen van de wol in onze ambachtelijke natuurlijke verfstoffen, die boven een open vuur worden verwarmd. De wol wordt zorgvuldig geroerd om een gelijkmatige kleuring te garanderen. Deze stap is cruciaal voor het bereiken van de diepe, rijke kleuren die onze Beni Ourain vloerkleden onderscheiden. We vermijden zorgvuldig alle chemicaliën, zodat elk vloerkleed zo natuurlijk en veilig mogelijk is.

Stap 3: Weven van het vloerkleed – Schoonheid knoop voor knoop

Het weven van een Beni Ourain – Beni Mrirt vloerkleed is een ingewikkeld en arbeidsintensief proces dat vaardigheid, geduld en precisie vereist. Elk vloerkleed wordt knoop voor knoop gemaakt, een techniek die van generatie op generatie is doorgegeven. Het maken van een vloerkleed van 200x300 cm kan 4 tot 6 weken duren, afhankelijk van de complexiteit van het ontwerp. Onze getalenteerde wevers behoren tot de weinigen op de markt die een ontwerp van een foto kunnen reproduceren met een nauwkeurigheid van wel 95%.

Stap 4: Trimmen van het vloerkleed – De pool perfectioneren

Voordat het vloerkleed gewassen wordt, trimmen we de pool zorgvuldig met grote handscharen om te zorgen dat ze gelijkmatig zijn. Deze stap vereist grote vaardigheid en precisie, waarbij de wever elk gedeelte zorgvuldig trimt om de gewenste textuur en gladheid te bereiken. Door de pool gelijk te maken, verbeteren we de zachtheid en uniformiteit van het vloerkleed.

Stap 5: Wassen van het vloerkleed – Zuiverheid en veiligheid

Het wassen van het vloerkleed is een van de meest kritieke stappen in ons proces. Helaas worden 80% van de vloerkleden op de markt nooit gewassen, en van de 19% die wel gewassen worden, worden er veel behandeld met schadelijke chemicaliën. In onze werkplaats wassen we elk vloerkleed 4 tot 5 keer met alleen water en natuurlijke zeep. Dit grondige wassen reinigt het vloerkleed en zorgt ervoor dat het veilig is voor uw huis.

Stap 6: Drogen van het vloerkleed – Onder de Marokkaanse zon

Na het wassen worden onze vloerkleden zorgvuldig opgehangen onder de Marokkaanse zon om te drogen. Dit natuurlijke droogproces duurt 2 tot 4 dagen, afhankelijk van het weer. We laten de zon zijn werk doen, langzaam en zachtjes, zodat elk vloerkleed gelijkmatig en grondig droogt. Als het regent, wachten we gewoon, want dit eeuwenoude proces laat zich niet haasten.

Stap 7: Eindcontrole – Klaar voor zijn nieuwe thuis

Voordat een vloerkleed onze werkplaats verlaat, ondergaat het een strenge inspectie om te garanderen dat het aan onze hoge normen voldoet. Een goed gemaakt Marokkaans vloerkleed is bedoeld om decennialang mee te gaan, en we nemen deze verantwoordelijkheid serieus. We controleren elk detail om er zeker van te zijn dat het als authentiek Beni Ourain vloerkleed bestempeld mag worden.

OunizZ founders, Sonia and Oussama, share a deep love for beauty and nature, both of which are abundant in Morocco. From snow-capped mountains and untouched deserts, to pristine beaches and ephemeral wetlands, OunizZ is on a mission to share the country’s hidden gems through exceptionally crafted Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs.

Sonia was working in the hospitality industry when the pandemic swept the world. The thousands of travelers who journeyed to Morocco each year were unable to buy the one-of-a-kind handmade items that enriched the local economy, while weavers (some of them Sonia’s family members) were unable to sell their textiles and put food on their tables.

When Sonia lost her hospitality job, she realized she could uplift hundreds of women, returning their financial independence and ability to practice the craft they had honed over decades. She and her husband Oussama founded OunizZ with the vision of transforming the industry and exporting Moroccan rugs to the world and, within a year, the company grew into the largest exporter of rugs in the country.

Bringing Transparency to the Moroccan Textile Industry

While Moroccan rugs have grown in demand over the past few decades, the art form has been under threat. This is because the overwhelming majority of companies selling Moroccan rugs online are not the makers—instead, they are intermediaries who buy rugs at low prices.

Moroccan rugs are traditionally made in rural areas with little access to education and employment. Many of these weavers do not know the market value of the rugs they create. As a result, the women who create Moroccan rugs become invisible in the industry, seldom benefitting from their sales and rarely making enough to sustain their families.

At OunizZ, we don’t—and never will—source rugs through intermediaries. Instead, we work directly with weavers to ensure they are paid fairly. Our Moroccan rugs, Beni Ourain rugs, and Boujaad rugs are custom-made for OunizZ, and crafted in our weavers' own homes, where they work with their mothers, sisters, and daughters. This empowers them to pass on generational wisdom while working at their own rhythm and caring for their families and communities.
